Commonwealth Government 1943 - 1950 AWC - DWH - CDW
AWC =
Allied Works Council
DWH = Department of Welfare and Housing
CDW = Commonwealth Department of Works
Approx 1943 - 1950. Some Government Department issued their own
plates.
There is a strong possibility that these plates were more correctly an 'asset'
number than a 'registration' number. My reasoning is that I have found
examples of these plates on machinery which had no means of propulsion.
See below - this AWC number was applied with a welding rod to a very old piece
of road making equipment (enhanced with chalk for picture).
General Issue
1945 - 'C' plates
These plates have a red 'C' followed by a black dot and up to 5 numbers, in
black on an off white background.
Plates were used 1945 until about 1961, but they have been seen on vehicles
owned by the Commonwealth (mostly trailers) for many years after that.
General Issue 1961 onward. 'Z'
plates
Plates have red 'Z' as first letter followed, in black, by two letters and then
3 numbers.

Special state issue from
Western Australia. The only state which requires identification on a
Commonwealth plate. |
Federal Interstate Plates are issued to trucks which transport freight across state borders. They apply only to vehicles which load in one state and unload in another. Not for intra state use.

The first
letter of the plate indicates the
state of issue: |
The second
letter of the plate indicates the
vehicle type: The last
letter of the plate - if an 'M'
indicates that the vehicle is
monitored for road mileage covered: Most likely only on the 'X' plates. |
