General issue Number Plates were for all vehicles other than motorcycles

Early Victorian Number Plates -  1910 - 1932

Plates were made by owners or made commercially.  Various sizes and styles of plates are found from this period.  While colour should have been White on Black, many plates are found which appear to have displayed numbers in unpainted alloy (silver).

        Porcelain Victorian Number Plates -  1932 - 1939
   
         This style of plate was the first official issue from Victoria       Porcelain plates

             General Issue   1939 - 1953

General issue plates were for passenger vehicles, trucks, taxi and buses.
        Mounting holes are off set and unpainted border was correct.

        General Issue     1953 - 1977

Standardized sizing of Australian number plates  372mm x 133mm.

1953 (Jan) - 1977 (Nov)
Series commenced with GAA ###  and went to LZZ ###.   Initially, the  letters 'I' and 'Q' were not issued.

        1974   'I'  Block plates

The IAA ### block was released in 1974.   There are some variations in manufacture within this block  in relation to the dies used.  See the  'I'  and the dividing diamond.  At this time the letter 'Q' was also permitted for the first time in Victoria.

        General issue   1977 - 1995    Passenger and trucks

          "Victoria Garden State" slogan commenced November 1977

Green on reflective White base.   Variations in paint colour are found.

     

     

Due to a shortage of plates at one time some plates were made out of sequence. 
Two series were produced RA# and RB#.

A further series was produced out of sequence prior to the 'On The Move' slogan release, these were 'FV' and 'FY'  series, made in Queensland.

Variations in the slogan dies exist, see the spacing and length of hyphen..

1994 - 2000   Series 'NA' - 'QD'

       General Issue - February 2000 'Interim Plate' slogan "Victoria"

Issued after a change of government and discontinuation of previous slogan 'On The Move' because of its affiliation to previous government.

General Issue - New Slogan -
'The Place To Be'

Issued late 2000, by new 'Labor' government.
